Tax Treaty Eligibility
The United States has income tax treaties with several foreign countries. Under these treaties, residents of foreign countries may be eligible to be taxed at a reduced rate or exempt from U.S. income taxes on certain items of income they receive from sources within the United States. These reduced rates and exemptions vary among countries and specific items of income.
Important Reminders & Documents Needed before scheduling an Appointment:
- If you are transferring from another university, you WILL NOT be eligible for the tax treaty benefits for your transfer year.
- You will need to have completed FNIS requirements and obtained a social security card prior to signing up for an appointment and completing tax treaty documents.
- Students who hold a visa and passport from the Country of India, the tax benefit is established when deductions are processed and do not need to make an appointment to complete treaty documents.
- Please be prepared to show original documents: VT ID, Social Security Card, Work Authorization, Visa, Passport, and I94.
- Please select an appointment date that is 3-4 business days from the date you complete the sign up. Due to time constraints, same day appointments cannot be honored.
I9 Reverification Appointment
The International Tax team is responsible to reverify an employee’s employment authorization no later than the date employment authorization expires. The employee must present a document that shows current employment authorization, such as any documentation from List A or C, including an unrestricted Social Security card. Restricted Social Security card will be rejected, and the employee will be asked to provide a different document from List A or C. We can also accept certain receipts for reverification; see the Acceptable Receipts table in Section 4.4, Acceptable Receipts, for more information. Virginia Tech cannot continue employing a person who does not provide proof of current employment authorization in a timely manner.
- Please be aware the I9 reverification will have to be completed on or before the date your work authorization expires to continue working.
